Spykerfontein Farmhouse

Spykerfontein This, believe it or not, is the original name for this portion of the greater Farm Rietfontein. The original homestead was left to ruin and disrepair during the period it was used as a sheep grazing outpost, home only to a colony of bats. In early 2003 the windows were still boarded shut and the wooden floor inside was a hazard. The large shed which now houses the butchery was then a derelict wooden sheep-shearing enclosure.

The house has since been fully renovated and the former outbuildings now form a cottage with two full bedrooms separated by a bathroom. An outside scullery/laundry was added to make the kitchen area more user-friendly. A large traditional anthracite-burning AGA stove becomes the heart of the house in winter as the kettle dances on the stove top, permanently on for tea.

The house sleeps between 11 and 13 people and comprises of 3 double en-suite bedrooms, one additional room attached to a double bedroom and so particularly suitable for families with children, and the 2-bedroom plus bathroom outbuilding in the courtyard. A reed-enclosed Lapa adjacent to the house provides a wind-sheltered braai area and a place where campfire stories can be told long into the night.

Spykerfontein is a Karoo-oasis: tall trees with spreading branches, palm trees and olives, bright bougainvilleas, lush lawns, roses and fruit trees, fever trees and Acacias, and a shady pergola hanging heavy with old-fashioned table grape vines. Sit in the sun on the traditional Karoo-stoep, curl up with a book and drink tea, or just watch the world stand still.
