Welcome to Rietfontein Game Farm
Rietfontein is in the Great Karoo and is located in the Prince Albert district, Western Cape, South Africa and is the closest dedicated plains game hunting facility to Cape Town, a 4.5hr drive away. The property measures approximately 40 000 acres in extent and lies in the wide valley of the Groot River and its tributaries. The undulating topography of the drainage valley and the nearly 80km of riverine vegetation make the farm unique in terms of stereotyped perceptions of the Karoo as dry, flat and never ending. There are many sections of the farm where you pass through tunnels of overhanging trees, and running water is always to be found downstream from the natural spring which gives the farm its name.
The large extent of the property allows Rietfontein to offer a wide variety of hunting and non-hunting activities without conflict: rifle hunting, bow hunting, trophy hunting and many activities that families can enjoy such as mountain-biking, hiking and walking, fossil-hunting, star-gazing and astronomy, writing or simply soaking up Karoo tranquillity.
There are at least seventeen species available for hunting. The farm does not have Big Five animals and is stocked with game only, except for a few hundred Damara sheep on one section of the farm which are kept for mutton and fat addition to the home-made sausage, mince and hamburger patties.
The owners have tried to recreate the feel of the traditional Karoo farm homestead and there are two lodges, each with fireplaces, AGA anthracite stoves and magnificent covered verandahs, as well as reed-enclosed Lapas for cosy campfire braais. Each homestead has a traditional Karoo garden with lush lawns, roses, pomegranates, fruit trees, palms and olive trees as prominent features.
All accommodation is fully equipped with bedding, towels and kitchenware.
